Garlic 14 Apr, Anon (Australia - temperate climate)
I think it takes awhile for garlic to germinate. Probably more about the seasons changing - summer to autumn. It is only now just starting to become cooler. A reasonable watering 1-2 times a week depending on how hot it is and if the soil dries quick or not.
Pumpkin 12 Apr, John (Australia - temperate climate)
Why does my pumpkin form a fruit to about tennis ball size then the fruit dies off a greeny yellow ??
Pumpkin 12 Apr, Liz (New Zealand - temperate climate)
Your pumpkins might not be pollinated. Pumpkins, courgettes etc need bees to pollinate them. You can hand pollinate either with a soft artist's brush or by picking the male flower (no miniature pumpkin behind flower) and brushing the pollen onto the female flower stamens . Have a look at this https://www.thekitchn.com/summer-gardening-handpollinati-57513
French tarragon 12 Apr, Sarina (Australia - temperate climate)
Where can I buy French tarragon plants or seeds now (April)?
French tarragon 26 Oct, Alan (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Try Allrareherbs ... just received 3 x French...excellent service, but get them to send on a Monday so they will not spend weekend in a post office
French tarragon 14 Apr, Liz (New Zealand - temperate climate)
French tarragon should be grown from cuttings. Seeds are usually Russian tarragon, which is not such a good flavour.
Pumpkin 11 Apr, Leanne (Australia - temperate climate)
Hi I’m in South Australia on the coast - have lots of pumpkins coming up from my compost - will they grow ?
Pumpkin 14 Apr, Anon (Australia - temperate climate)
Check the planting time for pumpkin in temperate zone.
Pumpkin 11 Apr, Sandi (Australia - temperate climate)
It's early Autumn and I've just discovered a lot of pumpkin vine volunteers in my top garden. Should I let them go or pull out now, given there is not enough time for them to set fruit before Winter? I live in a warm temperate area above Sydney.
Pumpkin 15 Apr, John Mauger (Australia - temperate climate)
They may come to something but I am doubtful. Let them grow as long as you can and then grate them. Pack them into bags and freeze them. Use them as you would zucchinis in soup, loaves, and muffins or slice. At least they won't be wasted
Sweet corn (also corn, maize) 10 Apr, Pamela MATHEWS (Australia - tropical climate)
Hellow .. what is the best way to plant corn..eg:in rows or bunch in together..first time grower..thank you
Sweet corn (also corn, maize) 14 Apr, Anon (Australia - temperate climate)
Plant 2-3-4 rows about 80-90cm between rows. When plants are about 40-50cm high run some fertiliser down each side of the plant and then hill the soil up around the plants. Makes the plant more stable in the ground.
Sage (also Common Sage) 10 Apr, Christina (Australia - tropical climate)
Hi I live in northern New South Wales, a couple of kilometres from the coast. I have rosemary established (30cm) in a reasonably sized pot on my northern cement balcony & was considering placing a sage cutting in beside it. As they're compatible do you think they'd be comfy in the same pot or too crowded. Top of pot diameter is 35cm, height 30cm. Rosemary planted slightly to one side. Thanks, Christina
Sage (also Common Sage) 14 Apr, (Australia - temperate climate)
My suggestion do another pot.

Tomato 14 Apr, (Australia - temperate climate)
Had to say what your problem is, too much water, too little water, too hot. Maybe start again.
Asparagus 08 Apr, KArin Duthie (Australia - temperate climate)
I have asparagus seeds - when should I plant the seeds? What is the best orientation and spacing?
Asparagus 09 Apr, Anon (Australia - temperate climate)
Spring, 30-40 cm apart, full sun.
Rhubarb 08 Apr, Anon (Australia - temperate climate)
What about growing rhubarb in the San Francisco Bay Area - Oakland - South/across the bay from SF?
Gourd (also summer squash) 07 Apr, Umme Faraat (Australia - temperate climate)
Which month i can plant bottle gourd ?
Gourd (also summer squash) 08 Apr, Anon (Australia - temperate climate)
Plant spring and summer in warm areas. Look up Boondie seeds or Eden seeds on the internet and look up bottle gourd.
Cape Gooseberry (also Golden Berry, Inca Berry ) 07 Apr, Charlene (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate)
Hi, Do they prefer sunlight, shade or semi shade?
Cape Gooseberry (also Golden Berry, Inca Berry ) 08 Apr, Hugh Thenasia (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate)
Bright sunlight is best and no need to water heavily. ;-)
Cape Gooseberry (also Golden Berry, Inca Berry ) 08 Apr, Anon (Australia - temperate climate)
Most vegetables need a fair amount of sunlight, that is one of the main ingredients for them to grow. Some only need 4-6 hrs, some 6-8 hrs. Try growing something in shade and see how it grows. Read up on the internet how many hours of sun plants need.
Beans - climbing (also Pole beans, Runner beans, Scarlet Runners) 07 Apr, Don McLeod (New Zealand - temperate climate)
I bought a few years ago a different scarlet runner flowers white & red they have turned out to be a perenial not an annual like most modern runners . Query can I cut back while the leaves are green or do I have to leave and let die back so the root system gets more nourishment ? Thanks
Beans - climbing (also Pole beans, Runner beans, Scarlet Runners) 20 Apr, Claudia (Australia - temperate climate)
Scarlet runner bean aka 7 year bean is a perennial bean. It will die back in the cooler months and shoot up again when warm enough. You can cut them back, compost, seaweed solution and mulch. When it starts to shoot up again, it will need a good feed.
Beans - climbing (also Pole beans, Runner beans, Scarlet Runners) 08 Apr, anon (Australia - temperate climate)
My thoughts on this are, you paid $3-5 for a packet of seeds and they probably produced $20- 30 worth of beans. That is a pretty good investment. If you like, let a few mature and keep the seeds for planting in the future. Why bother messing around with old plants trimming them and looking after them for months. Your soil needs a good working over and resting and manure compost etc added to build it up for the next season of plants.
Chicory (also Witloof, Belgian endive) 07 Apr, Jo (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
Hi, I've bought some 'Cicoria variegated Di castelfranco' seeds and wonder whether it's at all possible to put them in my garden bed now? I'm in Melbourne, and new to growing chicory. Any advice is much appreciated! Jo
Chicory (also Witloof, Belgian endive) 08 Apr, anonymous (Australia - temperate climate)
If you go to the blue tab at the top of the page called CLIMATE ZONE you will see you are temperate climate. Then go to CHICORY. Look at the planting guide. About SEP TO DEC. Read the notes about how to grow it.
Ginger 06 Apr, Maria (Australia - temperate climate)
