Chilli peppers (also Hot peppers) 20 Apr, Jim (USA - Zone 8a climate)
Just my observations. I am in zone 8a. I built my first lasagne bed in the fall of 2018. Then planted n spring of 2019. I experimented with a variety of chiles. Poblano, Thai, Cayenne longs, Pasillas, Italian sandwich, Sweet Bells, and Jalapeño. The bed got full sun, I planted closely, and harvested 472 mature chiles. Every variety produced heavily. This would seem to contradict your data, that chiles need growing room, and good air circulation. The “ stems” were more like trunks of a two year old fruit tree. Almost 2” in girth and very sturdy. I submit this data not to gloat, but for further consideration. Thank you!
Chilli peppers (also Hot peppers) 24 Jun, Mairlyn (USA - Zone 8a climate)
Jim what date did you plant your chiles? I'm new to the area and gardening and want to plant poblano peppers. Thank you
Chilli peppers (also Hot peppers) 04 May, Colleen (USA - Zone 9b climate)
Hey Jim, How many plants did you plant in the bed? One of each? I'm doing a variety of chili peppers in containers this year and your comment gives me hope that two plants could fit in one 7 gallon grow bag. Thanks! Best, Colleen
Chilli peppers (also Hot peppers) 02 May, Melinda Schwab (USA - Zone 8a climate)
Thanks for sharing!! I have had huge trunks before on ours as well because we planted them in front of our hen house [bedding was tossed out in that garden area all year] and they were HUGE by October and loaded to the point of cracking a few "branches" from the weight... LOL! I think the same thing... They just like a lot of sun and nitrogen and water at least once every week or two.... Didn't seem to matter much about spacing and the closer they were the less breakage it seemed to have. :-)

Cucumber 18 Apr, Stephanie (USA - Zone 8a climate)
This is my first year planting in this zone as I recently moved here. I am used to planting in a much different climate. My other plants in my garden seem to be doing well. However, my cucumbers are dying. Please help!! I plant 2 foot apart. I planted next to green beans and radishes. Are they getting too much water?not enough fertilizer?
Cucumber 25 Dec, Zain (USA - Zone 8a climate)
Cucumbers growth’s slows down when the temperature goes over 95 degrees and also below 50 degrees
Amaranth (also Love-lies-bleeding) 16 Apr, Tanya King (USA - Zone 5b climate)
Your site says Amaranth isn't recommended to grow in Zone 5, but I've seen amaranth grow and spread on the University of Colorado Denver campus. It seems to be growing just fine as it comes back every year.
Amaranth (also Love-lies-bleeding) 02 Jul, Victor Vasconcelos (USA - Zone 6a climate)

Basil 10 Apr, Joe Ruscigno (USA - Zone 7b climate)
When is it safe to plant basil plants in pots outdoors?
Shallots (also Eschalots) 09 Apr, Michelle (USA - Zone 8b climate)
When do you plant the shallot seed? Is it recommended to direct sow? If so when? Or is recommended to start indoors (if so when?) and then transplant outside (if so, when?). Thank you
Shallots (also Eschalots) 05 Feb, (USA - Zone 7b climate)
A true shallot is grown from bulbs. I plant 3 bulbs together. These can then grow into between 10 and 40 stalks. These stalks will form a bulb if left to do so. I generally pick the stalks before they flower and bulb. I leave the plant to bulb if I want bulbs for replanting and I sell the bulbs to Indian and Asian people for cooking. I believe a spring onion doesn't bulb but has a seed head. Scallions are like a spring onion but do not go to seed. They taste a bit like an onion. You can pick these and replant them, cut most of the top off and plant leaving some stalk sticking out of the soil. In some parts of the world shallots are called multiplying onion, potato onions and I'itoi onions.

Cucumber 27 Mar, Eric Peterson (USA - Zone 10a climate)
Hi there! I was wondering why cucumbers shouldn't be grown near tomatoes? Thank you!
Cucumber 29 Mar, Brenda (Australia - arid climate)
You actually can. They are companion plants and grow well together but both dislike growing near potatoes. Basil also likes tomatoes and cucumbers. Funny isnt it :)
Silverbeet (also Swiss Chard or Mangold) 24 Mar, Tim McKelvey (USA - Zone 8b climate)
When speak of "compatibility to grow beside", how close or far is that? How far apart do compatibles and antagonists have to be that we don't need to worry about compatability factor?
Silverbeet (also Swiss Chard or Mangold) 26 Mar, Liz (New Zealand - temperate climate)
To avoid problems, it is best to plant varieties listed as not compatible in separate beds or pots etc.
Leeks 24 Mar, Audrey Dempsey (USA - Zone 5b climate)
I am in Upton, MA. My leek plants arrived today. I was planning to be away in April and May, so I had them sent early. Now I am home with trip cancelled. Can I plant the leek plants now? If not, how long can I wait? I have 50 Lancelot leek plants.
Potato 22 Mar, Gretta (USA - Zone 9b climate)
I have dense clay yard soil with rocks so I may need to get ALOT of mulch to grow potatoes in zone 9b. Right? I'm a total beginner so any tips or feedback for zone 9b would be appreciated
Potato 07 Jun, Ross (USA - Zone 7b climate)
I like the idea from the gardener in Australia. G'Day to you. I also have soil like you with clay and rock so digging the trench allows a quick easy replacement but drainage can be a problem with the rocky clay soil. Potatoes love water but too much and they will rot. Try choosing a location with a higher elevation if possible. Sometimes rain pooling can be avoided at higher locations by digging a small trench as a drain. Avoid areas that are already wet or are typically wet. At my place the trench filled with water and took more that a week to drain. I back filled the trench and chose another location.
Potato 24 Mar, Chris (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
You could try digging a shallow trench, put the seed potatoes in this, and cover with straw/mulch and compost or rotted manure. Keep topping up the straw as the potatoes grow. You'll end up with potatoes and some good quality soil.
